Miss Ramkelawan

Miss Ellis

Welcome to our class page!

We are so excited to share all of the amazing learning, adventures and achievements happening in our classroom this year. On this page, you will find important updates, key information and helpful resources to support your child at home.

We regularly share photos and updates on Seesaw, including special moments such as Star of the Week, Reader of the Week and other classroom achievements, so please check regularly to keep up to date with all of the wonderful things happening in class.

We are looking forward to a fantastic year full of fun, creativity, exploration and progress. Thank you for your continued support — we can’t wait to learn and grow together!

Reading – We read in Year 1 EVERY day. This includes through guided reading, phonics activities and also individual reading. Now that the children are in Year 1, we will also be furthering our reading for understanding and meaning. There will be additional focus on developing our comprehension skills.

Please read with your child at home as often as you can. You can use your child’s reading diary as a method of communication with us about how your child is reading at home. There are rewards at school for reading at home!

Maths

In Maths, children will develop confidence and fluency through practical, engaging and interactive learning experiences. Throughout the year, we will build strong foundations in number, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, shape, measurement and problem solving.

We encourage children to explain their thinking, use mathematical vocabulary and apply their skills in real-life contexts. Lessons often include practical resources, games and investigations to help children deepen their understanding and become confident mathematicians.

Our aim is for all children to develop a positive attitude towards Maths, take risks in their learning and feel proud of their progress and achievements.

Phonics

Phonics image(1).jpg

In Phonics, we follow the Supersonic Phonic Friends scheme to support children in becoming confident readers and writers. Through fun, engaging and interactive lessons, children learn letter sounds, blending for reading and segmenting for spelling.

Phonics is taught daily and follows a clear progression to help children build fluency, confidence and accuracy. Children will practise reading real and alien words, develop their tricky word knowledge and apply their phonics skills across all areas of learning.

We encourage regular reading and phonics practise at home, as this makes a huge difference to children’s confidence and progress. Our aim is to foster a love of reading and help every child become a successful, enthusiastic learner.

Science

In KS1 Science, children are encouraged to explore, question and investigate the world around them through practical, hands-on learning. Throughout the year, we will cover a range of exciting topics including animals, plants, materials, seasonal changes and everyday scientific enquiry.

We aim to develop children’s curiosity, observation skills and confidence in asking questions by providing engaging investigations and real-life experiences. Children will learn to make predictions, observe closely, sort and compare objects, and talk about what they discover using simple scientific vocabulary.

Science lessons are designed to be fun, interactive and inspiring, helping children to develop a love of learning and an understanding of the world around them.

PE

Please provide your child with a PE kit (black shorts, white t-shirt and black pumps; all named).

PE is on a Wednesday morning.

Reminders:

Please remember to send your child to school with a water bottle daily.
Please can all children bring a coat to school each day as it is starting to get colder.
Please can your child bring their reading book to school daily, even if it is not their day to read with an adult in school.
Please can children bring their PE kit into school clearly labelled. Your child can leave their PE kit on their peg. Please also label school jumpers.

If you have any questions or queries, you can contact the school office to arrange an appointment with your class teacher.

Thank you for your continued support.
