Year 6 2026 - 2027

Welcome to the Year 6 Class Page and the final year of primary school at Wharton!

Welcome back to the Autumn Terrm at Wharton Primary School of 2026. 

In Year 6, we want all the children to set the example for the rest of the pupils at our school by showing a postive attitude throughout all aspects of the school day, enjoying all the learning across the curriculum and (most significantly) smiling whilst haivng fun.

English - We will have English lessons every schol day and these will be taught in the morning. Throughout the year, we will be continuing to explore different text types, rangig from fiction to non-fiction and poetry. There will also be many opportunities for the children to write for new purposes too.

To begin our first half-term, we will start by studying all about North and South America. We have a number of clips, books and images where all of our writing lessons will be based on. Our focus will be creating cohesive pieces of writing, carefully selecting vocabulary to enhance the action, and aiming to entertain! Within all pieces of writing, grammar, vocabulary and spelling underpin our aims, but we want the children to enjoy crafting and creating interesting and memorable pieces. 

Reading - Every day in school is a reading day. Guided reading sessions will begin by using extracts from several classic children texts, before exploring informative and persuasive non-fiction texts and thought-provoking poetry. The children will be reading independently, within whole-class guided sessions, during Reciprocal Reading topic lessons and join in as we read our class texts. 

Please encourage your child to read as often as possible outside of school. If you need any recommendations, please ask. Lovereading4kids.co.uk is a wonderful website for recommendations but we have a vast selection in school. Ask Mr. Lowe or Mr. Holden if you're not sure what your child should be reading next. Remember, comprehension and an appreciation of what you have read is of equal importance to speed and fluency so we have attached some suggested questions to discuss with your child. Just because they can read alone, doesn’t always mean they should.

It is so important that each and every child has an enjoyment of reading. There is a book for everyone! Both Mr Lowe and Mr Holden know that all of Year Six will be super readers by the end of the half-term!

Maths - We will have Maths lessons every schol day and these will be taught in the morning, after break time.Throughout this half-term, we will be recapping our knoweledge and understanding of place value and calculation. This is such a crucial part of the curriculum that enhances children's understanding of number and will build there confidence throughout all parts of Maths as a subject. 

Science - The focus for the coming half-term will be 'Animals including Humans' which looks at how we can improve our health, the process and function of the circularatory system, data recordings of our own individual heart rate with how that changes during exercise and dissecting of a chosen animal's heart! 

History - Our first history topic of Autumn term will be being taught after half-term. When we do so, it will be 'The World at War' which looks primarily at World War Two and the rise and fall of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, The Blitz and how that impacted many cities across the United Kingdom and the evacuation during the back end of 1939. 

Geography - Our first Geography topic for this academic year is called 'The Americas'. Here, we will be looking at similarities and differences in these two wonderful continents, the meaning of an actual continent, the physical and human features of an areas of the Americas and explain that coordinates pinpoint a geographical location.  

Computing - Mr Carlisle will continue to teach Year 6 computing lessons every Wednesday. 

Art - We will be focusing on North and South American artists and their work during the first half-term of the school year. 

R.E/Jigsaw (RSHE) - All About Me.

P.E. This is every Wednesday with Mr. Hamilton. Don't forget to bring the correct school PE kit, ready for this day. This is a white T-Shirt, black shorts and a pair of black pumps. It would be ideal if this kit was clearly labelled and kept securely in a labelled P.E. bag, so that any misplaced items can be returned quickly. Have a pair of track pants and something warmer available for outside. Children will also have an extra 30 minutes fitness session each Tuesday afternoon, taught by Mr Hamilton.

Homework
Reading will be the children's main activity that is expected outside of the classroom. If the right book is found, this should not seem like hard work! Weekly spellings will be provided and Purple Mash may host extra weekly activities which will be marked and discussed online with the children. Of course, any additional research or work is richly encouraged and will only benefit your child's progress throughout the year. Suggestions are attached, but really, any rehearsal of skills outside of school is beneficial: times tables games/apps, grammar monster, research about our topics/science.

Please remember that if your child brings their mobile phone to school, they must not use it on the playground while waiting to line up and it should be handed to their teacher as soon as they enter school. School will not be liable for loss of personal items. Thank you.
